It seems like the future can be seen as unknown, a bit bleak, or full of opportunities that were hard to imagine moving through the decades of childhood, adolescence and being an emerging adult.
Now you have arrived. But where?
Give or take, according to the uniqueness of each person, these next three decades of one’s life, the Second3rd of Life, who you are and what you will be about growing forward can either be a grand adventure, or sometimes a mine field. Here, the best of mentoring, via LDG’s Circle of Life Mentoring Framework guides men and women into living out life choices that, in time, will bring a sense of increasing fulfillment to one’s life.
There is a unique dance, if you will,
between who you are and what you will be doing
with the waking hours of your day.
It is in this time of realization that you will more fully establish yourself as a person with a vision for your life. Whole life mentoring becomes a creative vehicle to get you where you long to be. The best of mentors in this time frame of life will be guides to assist you in sorting through all of the possibilities before you.
Healthy relationships, new and old, that help you live well in every one of the 8 Dimensions of your own unique life are more crucial than ever. It is often at the beginning of this Second3rd that those choosing marriage and starting families will work well to take seriously their vows of love and friendship.
Productive work is hoped for. The human body continues to change. Finances become more necessary for a multitude of reasons. Why you are alive at this moment in world history begins to take on some unique forms, as you explore how you can make a serious difference in our world.
The potential of jammed schedules begins to show up, thus balanced priorities become all the more crucial. Commitment to time out to renew body, soul and spirit will be essential to maintaining health in every dimension of your life. Schedules to thrive, not just survive, will need to be tweaked often. Debt (as in not sinking into more…) will need to be addressed. Staying healthy in body, mind and spirit will be all the more important.
In what some call this “prime of life” time (which really there is “prime time” in every decade of life if one is creatively wise…) those who seek to live whole and healthy lives will be found to continue to seek mentoring from those who have made it through this age of realization and beyond. It is here that the terms “explore and discover” will be all the more important to living well in all that is being added to your existence.
Life at any age has its ups and downs. Some months there is more of one direction than the other. Sharing with a wise, trusted mentor your hopes and dreams, and seeking to understand any “oops!” moments, and even failures, will forge a future that one can not only live with, but live into with creative anticipation.
Every decade of life, every decision we make as mentors or mentorees, will plow the ground of our future for what we eventually plant there. Warren Buffett once said:
Someone’s
sitting in the shade today
because someone planted a tree a long time ago.
Here in 2015, as this is being written in one of the last days of Spring, I remember back to being 30 in 1972. The next fifteen years of realization took my wife and I from California to Colorado, where I entered grad school. Those were moments when what I longed to do with my life was forged and reshaped.
With some exceptional mentoring, with a fair amount of hard work, with a wife that cheered me on, with the care for a precious daughter being added to the mix, with friendships that began way back then still being prominent today, I am doing today what I only dreamed of doing back then. Seeds of hope got planted. Attention to the details of those moments have me sitting here writing to you.
It is my hope and prayer that when you get to be 73 you will be experiencing the fulfillment I enjoy today. Because of some serious obstacles I overcame, with some crucial whole-life mentoring, in my First3rd of life, I began to thrive in my Second3rd.
I know that you, in your own life, can look forward to thriving with mentorship care. Plan to live well and enjoy learning in this Second3rd of life.
At any age, we all will thrive with seeking additional mentoring.
