It’s Not Just A Job, It’s An Adventure!

What activities can you do effortlessly, where other people ask, “How you do that?”

What, in your work world, comes so naturally that you would almost do it for free?

Well……almost.

If the work of your waking hours and what you do effortlessly are one and the same, you may be living well into your created design, your unique ability, your calling. For most of us, though, we experience a lifelong journey of experimentation, practice, even failures, as we try to explore and discover what we were put on this earth both to be and do.

Along the way, we work!

From the young entrepreneur with a lemonade stand to the corporate boardroom, from the restaurant to the factory floor, we learn that others will pay us in return for our labor and intellect. However, somewhere along the path of life the dream of a small child gives way to the realities of modern life: family, mortgage, college, utilities, taxes–and the young dreamer becomes a pragmatic adult.

Often the result is that far too many if us have said things like:

“I can’t stand my job.”
“How did I end up here?”
“I wish I had _______________.”
“If I could just __________________.”

“What’s next?”

On the other hand, for many years, myself included, my work defined me. It drove me. The work demands increased on my end and carried over to those I love in lack of time to be there for them.

This “over focus” on the Vocational Dimension of the Circle of Life was also at the costly expense of a balance with the other 7 Dimensions and my wholeness. Our vocation, like may other things, can become an idol.

The day I discovered this over attention to the Vocational Dimension was one of the more freeing days of my life. To do good, meaning-filled, productive work is crucial. But the “over focus” was draining the hope and energy out of the rest of my life’s dimensions.

Be willing to be a continual learner.

How, then, can we put this all into perspective and discover a path that leads to our fully becoming the person, man or woman, we were designed and meant to be regarding what we do within our place in this world?

Talents, training, experiences, success, even failures, as well as how we use our time, energy and focus, are all part of what we bring to our Vocation. These are the elements that make each of us unique. Therefore, ONLY YOU can bring to this world, your place on the planet, what your life was designed, created, forged and grown to be, even this very day.

Notice I did not say that your unique life was just about what you can do or produce. You and I are so much more than just our labor or intellect. When we start to bring who we truly are, and are continuing to become, to our work, no matter what that work may be, we might just find that work is the beginning to define our calling, our vocation, in life.

In the Circle of Life, there are 8 Dimensions, with your personal Belief System at the core of you, informing who you are. The next seven blog posts will help you think through those dimensions, as you choose to live with creative freedom into your own exquisite design for being you, being alive, being a growing whole person in all of who you are.

Continually choose to become a whole person.
